Microsoft 365 price increase in 2026: what you gain

Every year or two, the big tech vendors — Microsoft among them — update their value offering, and that almost always comes with an impact on your investment. In 2026 it’s Microsoft 365’s turn: the new prices take effect on July 1, 2026. For many companies the news arrives in a single sentence: “the price went up.” That’s where the real challenge begins.

Why isn’t the increase the problem — how it’s communicated is?

When the adjustment reaches leadership as “Microsoft went from X to Y,” the conversation collapses into cost. But behind this increase there are concrete, measurable improvements: more mailbox storage, more security, and now built-in AI with Copilot Chat.

The problem isn’t the price — it’s that the value isn’t communicated. Whoever leads IT needs to translate the change into business language so the decision isn’t made looking only at the invoice.

How do you turn “the price went up” into “we gained value”?

The same news, told two ways:

Framing How it’s communicated
❌ Cost-focused “Microsoft raised Business Basic from US$ 6 to US$ 7 per user.”
✅ Value-focused “We doubled corporate mailboxes — from 50 GB to 100 GB each — and added anti-phishing protection, for US$ 1 more per month.”

(The storage comparison is illustrative; exact values depend on your plan, currency and market.) The business decision-maker isn’t paying for “a more expensive license” — they’re investing in more capacity, more security and AI for every dollar.

What does your business gain, plan by plan?

List price in USD per user/month, effective July 1, 2026:

Plan Previous price New price Mailbox storage What’s added
Business Basic US$ 6 US$ 7 50 GB → 100 GB Time-of-click link protection + Copilot Chat with inbox/calendar context
Business Standard US$ 12.50 US$ 14 50 GB → 100 GB Same anti-phishing protection + Copilot Chat + agents in Office apps
Business Premium US$ 22 US$ 22 (unchanged) 50 GB → 100 GB Copilot Chat on top of a base that already included Defender for Business and device management

On Basic, +US$ 1 a month buys double the mailbox, a real security layer and access to AI. On Standard, +US$ 1.50 is justified by storage and risk reduction alone. On Premium there’s no increase: you pay the same and get more capacity and AI.

What three improvements matter most to whoever leads IT?

A price increase, communicated well, stops being a problem and becomes an opportunity to prove how much value your IT investment generates.

List prices in USD per user/month; they may vary by country, currency and contract type. Effective July 1, 2026; existing customers keep their price until renewal.

Frequently asked questions

When does the 2026 Microsoft 365 price increase take effect?

July 1, 2026. Customers with an existing contract keep their previous price until they renew.

Do existing customers pay the new price immediately?

No. They keep their current price until their renewal date, giving a window to plan the change before it hits the invoice.

What’s the difference between Business Standard and Business Premium after the change?

Premium doesn’t go up in price (it stays at US$ 22) and already included advanced security like Defender for Business; Standard rises to US$ 14 and doesn’t include that extra security layer.

Does the included Copilot Chat replace the full Copilot license?

No. Copilot Chat with inbox and calendar context is included at no extra cost in Business plans, but it’s a different tier from the full Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
